The Tax Implications of Charity Trading
02/06/2010
The Charity Finance Directors' Group (CFDG), a partner in the Income Generation workstream led by Assosciation of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO) has published ‘The Tax Implications of Charity Trading,’ written by Pesh Framjee and members of the charity tax team at Horwath Clark Whitehill. This comprehensive guide is a must have for any third sector organisation raising funds through trade or considering this as a future development for their organisation. In the economic downturn the importance of trading and fundraising is becoming more and more apparent, with charities looking for new and innovative ways to gain essential resources.
As well as an introduction to the basic tax exemptions charities are entitled to, this book gives a detailed analysis of the tax and trading environment for charities acting both as a reference guide, and a source of useful practical advice. Chapters cover a wide variety of trading opportunities for charities, from shops and cafes to events and services, business sponsorships and merchandising.
Dionne Nelson Head of ACEVO’s Income Generation Programme says, “We knew a publication offering no-nonsense trading and tax essentials would be timely and well received by those helping to develop and sustain charities. We are pleased we partnered with CFDG and Horwath Clark Whitehall to bring a fine publication as part of the range of activities delivered through the Income Generation work strand”.
Pesh Framjee, Head of Not for Profits at Horwath Clark Whitehill and Special Advisor to CFDG who wrote one of the first books on charity trading in the 90’s says “Charities are carrying out an ever increasing range of activities to meet their objectives and to generate income. These are caught by sometimes complex rules and requirements which can lead to problems if they are not understood and addressed.”
David Membrey, acting CEO of Charity Finance Directors’ Group adds that “CFDG is very pleased to be releasing this detailed guide, which will provide an essential resource for a range of organisations across the sector dealing with the difficulties and implications associated with charity trading.”
