Objectives and activities
The leadership and governance workstream led by NCVO aims...
1. To increase the supply of suitable board members for frontline organisations
We are enabling support providers to help frontline organisations review the composition of their boards and increase the number and diversity of their board membership. This will be be undertaken through a range of activities, including the development of simple tools, local and regional training, and the development of best practice information based on learning across the private, public and third sectors. These resources will be shared in the tools library of this website.
2. To equip support providers with the skills to assist organisations to overcome barriers in accessing leadership development.
Leadership needs to be higher profile and action is required to address the sector's leadership development needs. We are developing a leadership programme, promoting the provision of leadership development for the community sector, alongside producing advice materials and guidance for participants. We are also developing a leadership programme for support provider leaders, to access mentoring and leadership training opportunities, to help them become exemplars of good practice.
3. To increase the governance knowledge of support providers, and ensure that more support providers will have reviewed their own governance and leadership practices to become models of best practice.
We will raise awareness of the need for organisation to carry out governance reviews using the most appropriate form for their needs. We will carry out detailed reviews of the governance systems, processes, and practices of support providers to help them become exemplars of good practice. We will also run ‘Cracking the Code’, a bursary scheme for support providers. This scheme, is designed to improve their governance based on the principles of Good Governance: a Code for the Voluntary and Community Sector. We will also provide a number of bursaries for organisations to take part in BoardsCount 2009. We will also provide a website to help charities, social enterprises and co-operatives decide on the most appropriate legal and organisational structure, for help support providers provide advice and information.
4. To raise understanding of the need for governance systems and regulation to be proportionate to the size and needs of the organisation
We work with policy makers, funders and SPs will be more aware of the need for governance systems and regulation proportionate to the size and needs of the organisation.
5. Cross-sector learning, support and skills exchange with the private and public services to
establish innovative, effective and sustainable practices
We will work with leaders of support providers to better equip them to be able to represent the sector in regional and sub regional partnerships through improved leadership skills and increased knowledge and understanding of emerging structures.
