Governance

Welcome to the leadership and governance workstream

The success and sustainability of third sector organisations depends on how they are led and governed. Our workstream’s role is to develop a network of support providers that has fully embraced this concept.

Our aims

We aim to bring about a transformational change to the way in which civil society organisations operate and thereby bring about a substantial improvement to the quality of life in the communities we serve.

We will do this by strengthening the ability of support providers to help third sector organisations, especially small ones, to develop their leadership and governance, thus increasing their effectiveness.

We will show how effective leadership and governance ensures:

  • the needs of their beneficiaries are met
  • the vitality of the organisation is sustained
  • their relevance to their local community is maintained
  • they are able to recognise the need for and to manage subsequent change.

What problems do we want to solve?

We have identified a number of key problems:

  • There is a shortage of board members with the skills and diversity that third sector organisations require.
  • Third sector organisations need access to opportunities to develop their leadership and governance skills so that they can become more effective in delivering their objectives and are sustainable long-term.
  • Support providers need to review their own governance and leadership practices and processes, so they can better support those they serve and can act as beacons of good governance.
  • We have also found there is a need for lighter touch governance for smaller community organisations and enterprises and for effective partnership working across sectors, so they can develop good practices without being over burdened.
