Lively discussions and useful tips at the human rights eventsThe Improving Support equality workstream is bringing human rights to life, in a bid to tackle exclusion and inequality, with a series of five free regional events. The events, delivered by workstream lead National Equality Partnership (NEP) in collaboration with the British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) and regional partners, explore the human rights capacity building needs of the third sector and are aimed at support and umbrella bodies that work with equality groups. Events have been held in Leicester, Taunton, Newcastle and London, with another one scheduled for Manchester on November 17. Participants from different sectors were introduced to the human rights approach to equality and discrimination, and learned about human rights law and its relevance to the third sector. Case studies were explored in groups sparking animated debates, while workshops gave participants the chance to discuss their needs and ideas for incorporating human rights into their daily work – informing future initiatives. Delegates expressed the value of a human rights approach and explored connections between human rights and equality. They stressed the third sector’s need to be skilled up in the theory and use of human rights through detailed and flexible training, practical tools and examples, plus contacts and support from human rights practitioners.
