Campaigning

Our partners

The Campaigning Effectiveness programme (CEP) of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) will be the lead agency for our workstream. CEP has been supporting third sector capacity building for campaigning since it was set up in May 2006 with a grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

We will work closely with the following partners:

  • British Association of Settlements and Social Action Centres (bassac) – a national network of multipurpose community-based organisations dedicated to tackling the causes and effects of poverty, exclusion and discrimination. This network will support community anchor organisations in developing advocacy and campaigning capacity.
  • British Overseas NGOs for Development (BOND) - a network of UK-based international development NGOs, working with its members on advocacy, campaigning and capacity building. In our workstream it will bring learning from international organisations to capacity-building work with domestically-focused organisations.
  • British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) - a human rights organisation committed to challenging inequality and injustice in everyday life in the UK by helping people to use human rights principles and standards to improve their own lives and as a tool for organisations to develop more effective public policy and practice. BIHR will introduce participating support providers to methodologies for rights-based approaches to campaigning and advocacy.
  • Directory of Social Change (DSC) - an internationally recognised independent source of information and support to voluntary and community organisations, enabling them to achieve their aims through being an independent voice, providing training and information. DSC will manage workshops, conferences and seminars to deliver capacity building for support providers.
  • Media Trust - building effective voluntary and community sector communications through a range of partnerships, projects and services including media training, a film and TV production unit, the digital TV station Community Channel, media matching and youth mentoring. The Media Trust will develop online/CD-ROM materials to support training modules and provide ‘using the media’ components for the training workshops programme.
  • National Association for Voluntary & Community Action (NAVCA) - the national voice of local third sector infrastructure in England; 360 members work with 140,000 local community groups and voluntary organisations which provide services, regenerate neighbourhoods, increase volunteering and tackle discrimination, in partnership with local public bodies. In the workstream NAVCA will draw on current pilots to develop and deliver training in campaigning and advocacy for local infrastructure organisations, rural community councils and sub-regional consortia.
  • People & Planet - the largest student network in Britain campaigning to end world poverty, defend human rights and protect the environment. It consists of groups at universities, colleges and schools and individual supporters. People & Planet will develop campaigning and advocacy capacities in higher education institutions through annual conferences.
  • Roehampton University - one of the largest, newest universities in the UK with particular specialisms in education and social sciences. Roehampton University will accredit our modular courses on campaigning, enabling successful participants to earn a Diploma of Professional Practice in Campaigning.
  • NOVAS Scarman Group - a new organisation resulting from the merger of the Novas Group and the Scarman Trust. The group will deliver a programme of regional road shows and research the effectiveness of regional campaigning & advocacy champions.
  • Westminster Explained - providing a wide range of training courses designed to meet learning and development needs across the public and voluntary sector, particularly about relationships between politicians, civil servants, campaigners and lobbyists. Westminster Explained will deliver a ten-module course in effective campaigning.
